The rapid adoption of smartphones and tablet computers reflects a basic societal trend—our increasing dependence on the Web and computer intelligence and a desire to always have that power available to us. My just-published book, The Software Society: Cultural and Economic Impact, discusses this trend and related trends in detail.

The growth of mobile devices is driven by a fundamental desire to always have computer intelligence available to us This desire has driven the growth of smartphones and tablet computers. Before smartphones, “feature phones” allowed a more constant connection to other people through voice or texting, as well as, in some devices, access to email on the go. What smartphones largely added was access to computers (e.g., the Web and navigation services). Arguably, this is a fundamental societal trend that makes computer intelligence something we increasingly depend upon.
